artist statement
Born in England, educated at Cleveland College of Art, Ian emigrated to south east Queensland Australia in 1991. He continued his art education by completing an Advanced Diploma in Ceramics to complement his already established painting skills. Working full time as an artist since 1996, mainly in oil painting, mixed media and ceramics, he became interested in encaustic at the beginning of 2003. Ian now works exclusively in this medium. His work explores the shapes, textures and colour of the Australian landscape. From both an aerial perspective and the repeated geography in the microscopic elements that make up that physical space. The choice of encaustic,the mix of pigmented beeswax and tree resin, is very important to him as these elements come from that landscape. Ian gunn. Sunshine Coast, Australia. August 2004.
